When Your Child Turns 18
10.01.08 Character From Within Impressing upon a young man the benefits of reaching deep down inside himself and becoming that better person is truly a humbling feat.
As I watch my mentee struggle with the recognition that he has a gift of leadership, my own leadership abilities were called into action. This is a critical time because he is being asked to step up his game and step out of his comfort zone. After being invited to join a leadership group of young boys at his middle school, part of his responsibility involved communicating to the group's advisor what "qualities" he will bring to the table.
My first objective was getting him to see himself like he wanted others to see him. As we talked it through, I saw the light go on! He was really beginning to understand what was being asked of him.
As he began writing his essay on leadership, I noticed a sense of pride not seen in our five months together. He was truly living the vision I had of him months before. I am beginning to understand the power of believing in a young man that is beginning to believe in himself.
And, what's more is, he was recognized with the "Best Essay Award' for his submission. The "thank you" he shared with me for helping him was enough to make a grown man cry.
